Jolene sprinted up the staircase after I’d buzzed her in on the system she’d installed. Since she’d done most of the improvements to the house, I could rely on her to tread carefully on the one worn step instead of slipping on it. Still, I’d have preferred her holding onto the railing.

“You won’t believe it,” she exclaimed.

Adriana, who stood beside me, rubbed her hands.

“Tell us, I mean, me.” I’d prepared a few snacks, which only served to remind me of my loss. In happier days, I’d have brought roast beef sandwiches and salads home from Butler’s Pantry. Now, I couldn’t even say if the establishment would exist much longer.

Jolene sank onto a chair and ogled the food.

“Have a bite,” I said.

She chewed slowly and with all signs of appreciation, to my relief and Adriana’s dismay.

My great-great-aunt loved food. Yet since all she could do was dine off the scents and at the very best, eat one morsel, if that’s what she did with it, she struggled with understanding how much time we mortals could spend with eating. She rested on the sofa, with a purring Cleo by her side.

“I’ve heard gratulations are in order,” Jolene said.

I looked at her in confusion.

“You’re the chosen one, who wields all the power over Pierre’s legacy? The only thing people can’t decide on is if you also inherit a share of the business.” She paused for a beat. “And a few idiots think it gives you a motive.”

“Me?”

Adriana jumped up so fast that she startled the cat. “Who says that?”

I waved my hand behind my back, trying to tell her to relax.

“I don’t inherit anything,” I said. “I’d appreciate it if you would make that clear to whoever needs telling. But you were going to say something else.”

“Right. I went to see the doctor and spun him a story about sleeping problems.”

“What did he say?” I asked.

“He gave me a prescription, for the same pills Felix used, and the same pills discovered in Pierre’s brandy.” A broad grin spread over her face. “He says they’re his go-to choice when it comes to sleeping aids, and Pierre had some himself - a bottle he’d asked for last year, for his nephew.”

“That’s strange. Why would Pierre ask for Grayson? He must have his own doctor.”

“I don’t know. But Pierre and he go back a long way, so he trusted him.”

“That means a lot of people had access to those pills,” I said.

“It certainly seems that way.”

“Has your cousin told you anything else about the case?”

“Like what?”

“Like, have the police found Pierre’s recipe book? He kept it in his safe.”

“You mean that’s what the murderer came for?”

“It’s a possibility.” I took my notepad where I had jotted down everything Adriana and I had thought of. “Depending on the motive, we have different suspects.”

“There’s the ledger,” Adriana prompted me when my dramatic pause, while I took a sip of water, lasted too long for her liking.

“The ledger,” I repeated. “It contained all those precious recipes collected over generations. Pierre never shared them with anyone, and he was offered lots of money to part with the secrets.
